ISO 50001:2018

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001:2018 is the new revised international standard for energy management, providing the most robust framework for optimizing energy efficiency in public and private organizations.

Certification to this standard demonstrates an organization's commitment to continuous improvement in energy management, enabling them to set an example within their industry and ensuring compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements.

Encourages more efficient use of your resources, in turn reducing the amount of complaints, returns, processes and rejections – potentially lower levels of regulatory reports.

Reduced carbon impact

Actively set goals to reduce carbon emissions and people will respond positively to your organization.

Legal compliance

Understand how legal and regulatory requirements impact your organization and its customers.

Proven business benefits

Independent verification against a globally recognized industry standard speaks volumes.

More business opportunities

Procurement specifications often require certification of the organization's management system as a condition of delivery, so certification opens up many new opportunities.

IS ISO 50001 RIGHT FOR ME?

It is suitable if you and your organization want to take control of how you use energy and manage related costs more effectively. This is especially useful for organizations with significant energy consumption.

If you have an ISO 14001 certificate, you already have the basic framework and are very close to the benefits of ISO 50001 certification.

If you already have an ISO 14001 environmental management system in place, you are already on your way to energy management system compliance and systems integration.

Changes in the new version of the standard

ISO 50001 certification demonstrates an organization's commitment to continuous improvement in energy management, and several changes were made to the 2011 version of the standard to align it with the needs of today's business environment.

The main change is the adaptation of the standard to align with Annex SL the „high-level structure“ as already seen in the 2015 versions of ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and the newly introduced occupational health and safety standard ISO 45001.

Other changes include normalization of Environmental Performance Indicators (EnPIs) and their associated Energy Baselines (EnB), clarification of the energy data collection plan requirements, and the overall goal of ensuring that key concepts related to energy efficiency are clear and accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
