ISO 45001:2018

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 replaces OHSAS 18001, becoming the ISO standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS).

The standard not only replaces OHSAS 18001, it will be able to integrate with other management systems more easily than ever before because it shares the new structure defined in Annex SL – it links directly to the new versions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

IS ISO 45001 RIGHT FOR ME?

If you are certified to OHSAS 18001, you can migrate to ISO 45001 and maintain the validity of your certificate. There is a normal 3-year migration period, so there is still time to plan your transition to ISO 45001.

ISO 45001 is suitable for you if you and your organization need to demonstrate a commitment to managing the safety of workers and stakeholders. If you already have a quality or environmental management system that complies with the new Annex SL structure, ISO 45001 OH&S can be seamlessly integrated.

Organizations implementing ISO 45001 need:

  • a clear management structure with defined authority and responsibility

  • defined improvement goals, with measurable results

  • A structured approach to risk assessment and reduction, as well as deficiencies in health and safety management, effectiveness and review of policies and objectives should be regularly monitored to ensure that improvements and business benefits are realised and prioritised accordingly.

ISO 45001 Terminology and Definitions

The new definitions of the terms "Risk", "Worker", "Workplace" and "Hazard Identification" may change for the following reasons:

Risk. The universal definition of the term „risk“ is clarified in ISO 45001, as this meaning is different in some countries. The term „Hazard Identification“ is encompassed by the terms „risk identification“ and „risk control“ to ensure that we cover all potential hazards applicable to all industries and sectors.

Worker. There are differences in the definition of this term and different legal restrictions around this term in different countries – in the context of ISO 45001, „Worker“ is defined as the person who works under the control of the organization and includes subcontractors.

The workplace. There are questions among organizations about what the workplace is, is this the site of your organization?

Hazard identification. The term is made up of the terms „risk identification“ and „risk control“ to ensure we cover all potential hazards applicable to all industries and sectors.
