ISO 19011:2026 updates the framework for auditing management systems

ISO 19011:2026 was published on 27 May as the fourth edition of the international guideline for auditing management systems and replaces the 2018 edition. It is not a certification standard and does not in itself create a certification obligation, but is a basic methodological framework for internal and external audits. ISO indicates an increased focus on technology, digitalization, virtual environments and risk analysis and mitigation. Organizations, auditors, consultants and certification bodies should compare their audit programs, competence criteria and practices for remote and hybrid audits with the new edition. It is necessary to check separately whether contracts, schemes or accreditation rules require a specific transition.
ISO/IEC 17065 reaches final stage before new edition

The draft of the second edition of ISO/IEC 17065 is in the final stage FDIS 50.20 of 4 August 2026 and according to ISO is expected to replace ISO/IEC 17065:2012 in the coming months. The new edition is not yet a published International Standard and the current basis remains the 2012 version. The alert concerns bodies that certify products, processes and services, accreditation bodies, scheme owners and regulators. They should appoint a project follow-up person, plan a gap analysis and identify procedures, competencies, records and contracts that may need to be changed. An operational transition should not begin before the final text and guidance from the applicable accreditation body.
